Ruapuha Uekaha Hapu Trust & Department of Conservation (DoC)

The partnership between the Ruapuha Uekaha Hapu Trust and the Department of Conservation is founded on the following principles;

  • A 50/50 partnership exists between the Maori owners and the Crown for management of the resource
  • Control of the caves is shared equally between the Crown and the RUHT by means of a Management Committee composed of representatives from the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Ruapuha Uekaha Hapu Trust
  • The task of the Management Committee is to protect both the ecological and Maori interests
  • DOC and the Maori owners are equally represented on the Management Committee
  • It is recognised that the interests of DOC and the Maori owners is essentially the same
  • The return of the land also provided the benefits from the Waitomo Glowworm Cave guiding business
  • The settlement agreement provided that “ upon the expiry or termination of the first License, the Crown and the Maori owners should either operate the Cave Guiding Business as a joint venture or issue a new License”.
  • Any profits from the venture, or any lump sum received upon issuing a new License, will be shared by the co-owners in proportion to their ownership.
