Emerging Leader Amongst Us

Dr Daniel Hikuroa Hapū Trust member Dr Daniel Hikuroa is the Research Director of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, National Centre of Research Excellence. He is an Earth System Scientist with interests in the integration of mātauranga Māori and science to realise indigenous development.

Daniel taught for three years at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in Whakatāne and increasingly found himself drawn to his taha Māori and to exploring the interface between mātauranga Māori and science.

Daniel has established himself as a world expert on integrating indigenous knowledge and science and has undertaken many projects including geothermal developments. Based on his geological background Daniel was seconded to the Waitomo Caves Management Committee and Waitomo Caves Environmental Advisory Group in 2012. Daniel continues in these roles today.
